After a loud day · Amsterdam

Sensual massage in Amsterdam after a day of noise and crowds

A day in this city puts a surprising amount of noise through a person: bells, trams, a crowd on every bridge and three hours of being narrowly missed by bicycles. This page is about the evening that follows, and about booking something for it before the day has finished happening to you.

Why this city is louder than it looks

The photographs suggest calm water and quiet brick. The experience is a narrow pavement with a bicycle lane on one side and a tram line on the other, in a centre that takes an enormous number of visitors through a small number of streets. Nothing about it is unpleasant on its own. The problem is that none of it ever stops: bells, construction, a boat with a speaker, a stag party on a bridge, and the constant low effort of not being in the way. By six in the evening a visitor who came here to relax can be wound tighter than he was at home, and be puzzled about why.

Noise fatigue is not the same as tiredness

It shows up differently. Ordinary tiredness makes you want to sit down. This makes you irritable at small things, unwilling to decide where to eat, and strangely alert once you finally do lie down. Sleep does not fix it reliably, because the state is not a sleep debt. What does help is a long stretch of low stimulation with nothing required of you, which is an awkward thing to arrange on a city break, since almost everything on offer in the evening involves going out to another room with more people in it.

Book it before the day has finished

The useful habit is to send the message in the middle of the afternoon rather than at ten in the evening. Two things follow from that. The hour is easier to arrange, because the evenings fill from the early side, and you spend the rest of the day knowing that the evening is already settled, which takes a surprising amount of weight out of the remaining hours. It also means you are writing while you still have the patience to write clearly, and a first message composed at two in the afternoon tends to have the room number in it.

What a session does with a day like that

Slow work at skin temperature is one of the few things that genuinely turns off the part of the mind that has been on guard since morning. The first twenty minutes are usually spent not quite settling: the day replays, the shoulders stay braced, and a certain amount of internal commentary carries on. Somewhere after that the commentary drops out. Guests describe it afterwards as the point where they stopped listening to the corridor. The effect is not dramatic and it does not need to be. What it does is give the nervous system an hour in which nothing is happening at it, which nothing else in a day of sightseeing will have done.

Choosing a length against the evening you have left

If you have to be up early, sixty minutes at 180 euros resets a body before a short night. If the evening is genuinely yours, ninety at 270 is the length that suits noise fatigue, because the first stretch goes on arriving and the second is where the tempo actually drops. Two hours at 360 is for the end of a week rather than the middle of one. When the problem is that you are wired rather than weary, breath led work at ninety minutes or two hours argues with the wakefulness less than a firmer massage would.

Keep the rest of the evening empty

This is the part guests get wrong. A session booked for eight o'clock with a table booked for ten undoes half of what the session did, because the clock comes back into the room with you. If you can, put the booking at the end of the evening rather than in the middle of it, and plan nothing after it except sleep. Eat before rather than after. Charge your phone before she arrives rather than after she has gone. None of that is ceremony, it is simply removing the three things that most often pull a guest back out of the state the hour got him into.

The room, and how to take the day out of it

A hotel room at the end of a loud day is usually still set up for the day: overhead light on, curtains open, television standing by, suitcase in the middle of the floor. Five minutes of undoing that is worth more than any format choice. One lamp instead of the ceiling light. Curtains closed. Heating up, because a room that feels fine dressed is cold once you are not. Water within reach. She brings towels and oil, so nothing else is needed from you, and asking for no music in the thread means nothing has to be arranged out loud once she is in the room.

Arrival, and why the window is honest

Forty to sixty minutes from the agreed hour to a knock, anywhere in the central districts. The count starts when she is ready to travel rather than when the traffic thins, so a quiet evening does not shorten it and a busy one does not stretch it much either. Plan against the far end and you will not be caught half dressed. Schiphol and the airport hotels sit outside that window and are arranged on their own terms, with the length of the journey agreed before an hour is held.

The next day, which is the actual point

Guests who book this on the last evening of a trip tend to say the same thing: they should have done it on the first. The value of a calm hour is not only in the hour. It shows up the following morning, in a version of the city that is suddenly tolerable again, with the bells and the bridges back to being scenery rather than an assault. The booking page sets out what to write, and it takes about a minute, which is roughly the amount of effort this has to cost you.
