A Phone Face Down Is Not Enough

It is the standard advice everywhere, it is repeated on this site, and on its own it is insufficient. A phone face down on a bedside table still buzzes, and a buzz against wood in a quiet room is louder than a phone ringing in a noisy one. The whole point of the arrangement is that nothing in the room asks for attention, and a device that announces itself every few minutes is asking.

What an interruption actually costs

More than the two seconds it lasts. A slow session works by letting attention drift downward and stay there, and every buzz pulls it back up. The recovery is not instant: it takes a minute or two to settle again, and four interruptions in an hour therefore cost something closer to ten minutes than to eight seconds.

Guests notice this afterwards rather than during. The common description is of an hour that was good but never quite got going, which is frequently a description of an hour with a phone in it.

The order of operations

Settle the booking thread first. This is the reason the phone cannot simply be silenced the moment the booking is confirmed: until she is at the door, the thread is the only way anybody can reach you, and a locked street door with an unreachable guest behind it is the one avoidable failure in the whole arrangement.

So: keep the phone audible and visible during the arrival window. Once she is in the room and the door is closed, put it in a drawer, in a bag, or in the next room. Not face down on the table. Somewhere that a vibration cannot travel out of.

The other devices in the room

A laptop that pings is the same problem with a bigger speaker. A television on standby with a blinking light counts even though it is silent, since a small light in a dim room is exactly where an eye goes. A smart watch is the one guests forget entirely and it is the worst of the lot, because it is on the wrist of the person lying down.

An air conditioning unit that cycles on and off is not a notification but behaves like one, arriving at irregular intervals with no pattern to get used to. Better off than on, and if it has to be on, set so that it runs continuously rather than cycling.

Do not turn it off entirely

Worth saying, because a few guests go the other way. A phone switched off is fine once she has arrived and is a poor idea before that. There is also no reason to be unreachable for the hour itself in any deeper sense; a drawer is sufficient and a drawer is reversible.

The one that cannot be fixed

A phone in the room of the person who is not being massaged, in a booking for two. Worth a sentence between the two of you beforehand, since one person deciding to be unreachable and the other keeping a group conversation alive across the room is a poor combination and an easy one to fall into.

A small test

Put the phone where you intend to leave it, then send yourself a message from another device. If you can hear it, it is in the wrong place. That takes fifteen seconds and it is a better use of the arrival window than most of what guests do with it.

The wider point about the room

Phones get singled out because they are the loudest offender, but the principle is general and it is the one thing a guest fully controls. An hour of slow attention is undone by anything in the room that periodically asks to be noticed, and a room contains more of those than anybody counts: a charging light, a fridge that cycles, a curtain that does not quite close over a street lamp, a clock with a second hand.

None of them is significant on its own and all of them are trivial to deal with in the forty to sixty minutes before she arrives. The useful exercise is to stand in the middle of the room with the overhead light already off and simply look and listen for a minute. Whatever announces itself in that minute will announce itself again at twenty past, and it will cost more then.
